I made this video using footage I took on my iPhone on the weekend. I put it together using iMovie ‘09 to see if it would be useful for another project I want to do. So, how was it?
Well, it was kinda crap. I have done some editing in the past and am used to having a single timeline with multiple tracks for video, audio, transitions, effects etc. This makes it very easy to synch video events with audio so you can match song beats or audio cues. I managed to do this quite successfully on one of my cricket videos.
In iLife, each video appears as a thumbnail with a fixed minimum size, meaning that the playback will go faster over some parts of the video, which makes it very awkward to synch. It is also hard to control audio volumes and impossible to have variable volume throughout the clip. The default settings also lead to lots of crossover and other annoying things.
Despite that, it is great at getting something up and running very quickly. I am not 100% convinced by it though, and for anything beyond simple blog stuff I think I might look elsewhere.
